I think it would depend on how unemployment works. If the unemployment you collect is more than you can make working part time, I say collect unemployment. Note: collecting unemployment isn't as easy as it sounds. You have to rifle through yards of red tape and prove each week that you are looking for work.

If you are married and/or have a family -- it is your duty to do what's right by them. It might mean swallowing your pride and working at Starbucks or Wal-Mart, but you do what you have to do to keep your family afloat.

Plus, a part-time job gets you up in the morning and gives you a routine. This makes it hard for the unemployed to mope around the house...

I would definitely pick up part time work. Money aside - I have a few friends that are laid off presently and I can tell that the time not working is starting to drag on them. They could use an outlet.

Yes, Yes, Yes... not doing something to rake in add'l income is nuts... especially if you're given to a scorthed earth view like it sounds like he his. Here are 3 reasons one should take on a part time job when times when they are 'between jobs'.
1 - show initiative... if the job market is so bleak what sets you apart? Perhaps a willingness to get off your rear and at least do something
2 - engagement... we are creatures of habit. We can get in the habit of sleeping in and trolling job sites and simple fade into the cushions on the couch or we can be up by 7 because I have to be at the grocery stocking shelves at 8 and I'll have all afternoon to engage this new found motivation not to be a 40 year stock boy
3 - make some money... sure we all have an Emer Fund (right?!?)... but that doesn't mean we can't help it out a little... consider a $2000/mo budget and a $10k EmerFund... 5 months to search. But a $500/mo part time job suddenly and easiliy turns your 5 month fund into a 6.67 month fund - more than a 33% extension. Hmm, would you like fries with that??
