Kristy’s Weekly Roundup
It’s been a long week. I think I clocked something like 65 hours this week at the credit union and I am wore out. To top it off, the Longhorns lost to Tech! But, it was a great game! So, to drown my sorrows of the loss, I went to the local comedy club for a few drinks and some laughs. It was a good time, but it’s always sad when the opening acts are funnier than the main attraction.
Oh well….on to this week’s list of articles to check out. As always, everyone did a fabulous job.
- J.D. at Get Rich Slowly talks about estate planning. It’s an important part of personal finance, yet many people still put off taking care of it - myself included. It’s depressing…plain and simple. Still, we should be making sure our estates are taken care of, so check out the tips J.D. has to offer!
- Living Almost Large asks if being poor drives frugality. I’d say it does to an extent. Certainly, those who’ve been poor tend to want to acquire wealth. And I agree with LAL, it can go two ways. Either they stay frugal all their lives, regardless of income; or, if they come into money, they turn into free spenders. Consider lottery winners. People who come from poor backgrounds and win the lottery are among the highest bankruptcy statistics. But, I think this is more about the fact that they didn’t work for the money than their frugality habits. Either way, it’s an interesting question.
- No Debt Plan has an awesome post on credit cards. Even the title is catchy…and appropriate. Credit Cards: The Ultimate Trick or Treat. I like it. Anyway, so NDP talks about the tricks and treats of credit cards, which is great information, and that they aren’t evil. It’s about balance and responsibility. An interesting read to be sure!
- Trent at The Simple Dollar talks about dealing with personal disappointments and tragedies. In the face of dealing with his own disappointments, Trent shares some tips on getting through. Check it out and offer your support! Trent, you’re in my thoughts and prayers!
- Trees Full of Money offers up some great financial advice for expecting parents. A friend of mine is in the process of trying to get pregnant. In fact, her husband walks around with the ever-so-classy shirt that says “Practice Makes Pregnant.” Despite the fact they both want a child, my friend worries over the financials of it all. I’ll be forwarding this article to her!
- Zen Habits talks about doing what you love without selling your soul. It’s tough. Most of us would love to follow our passions blindly, wherever they may lead. But the reality is the most of us have responsibilities that keep us grounded. Sometimes we luck out and don’t have to worry about being grounded, while other times we may fail. But, I remember something Dr. Randy Pausch said in his ‘Last Lecture.’ “The roadblocks are there to show us how much we really want it.” There’s no need to sell our souls just to be successful. But, you may have to find alternate paths to your success.
Ok, this week is totally catching up with me. I’m going to take advantage of the time change and get me some sleep with an extra hour thrown in for good measure. Just in case anyone has forgotten, it’s time to “fall back” with your clocks, so turn them back tonight before you go to sleep. Have a great weekend guys!
